These days it feels like everybody is claiming to practice sustainability, to appeal to target demographics. But can you trust that companies looking to make a quick buck are actually practising what they preach?
Pride Month is officially over and even though corporations rainbow logos have been taken down and the girls who bullied you for being gay in high school are no longer sharing pride-themed infographics, I’m still a raging lesbian and the LGBTQIA+ community still faces discrimination. So what can you do now that pride month is over to help the queer community, whether you are an ally or a member of the community yourself?
In the simplest terms, body neutrality is the idea that you can exist without feeling any way about your body, neither positive nor negative. You are worthy of respect simply for being, not for looking a certain way or feeling a certain way about yourself. For those of us who are well versed in negative self-talk, switching from this to positive self-talk can feel very daunting and inauthentic. This can be for a vast number of reasons such as a history of trauma, internalized misogyny, internalized weight stigma, and or history of an eating disorder.
